Working in Les Baux means working across an entirely listed area, at the foot of the Val d'Enfer and the château. The local landscape signature is the restanque — the dry stone retaining wall that takes up the slope and creates cultivable terraces. We restore them and build new ones, in stone quarried locally at Les Baux, without mortar, following techniques inscribed on UNESCO's intangible heritage list. A well-built restanque stands for a century; badly built, it collapses with the first heavy autumn rain.
The mas gardens around the village share an unwritten brief: restraint, a predominantly mineral palette, centuries-old olives kept, cypresses as punctuation, no English lawn. We work with beds of garrigue plants (broom, cistus, mastic, strawberry tree), stone basins and pale self-binding gravel paths that reflect little heat. The mistral, which funnels into the valley, calls for living windbreaks (cypress, holm oak) rather than solid panels.
As for constraints: anything visible from public space goes through the French heritage architect (ABF) for an opinion. We handle the prior declarations and the dialogue with the ABF for terraces, natural pools, pergolas and the felling of notable trees. Statutory firebreak clearance (OLD) is strictly enforced in the commune — the fire risk is high — and we build it into our annual maintenance contracts.
