Automatic irrigation in Provence

In Provence, irrigation is not a comfort but a condition of the garden's survival through summer — especially now that prefectural water restrictions have become routine in July and August. A properly sized system delivers the right amount of water, in the right place, at the right time, and cuts consumption by half or two thirds compared with hand watering.

We design bespoke installations from a zone-by-zone assessment of need: Mediterranean perennial beds on 2 L/h pressure-compensating drippers, hedges on 16 mm inline tubing, vegetable plots on micro-sprinklers, lawns on sectored pop-up rotors. Each zone runs off its own solenoid valve so run times and frequencies can be matched to the planting.

For control, we install Wi-Fi or Bluetooth programmers so the system can be shut down remotely when it rains, and we add rain sensors and soil-moisture sensors so watering only happens when the ground actually needs it. The network is fully buried below frost level, with isolation valves zone by zone and drain points for winterisation in November.

How we install

  1. 01Hydraulic survey — available flow and pressure at the meter, zone-by-zone water requirements, network plan.
  2. 02Trenching and laying — buried primary network, solenoid valves in inspection boxes, feeds to each zone.
  3. 03Choosing the emitters — pressure-compensating drippers for beds, inline tubing for hedges, micro-sprinklers for vegetable plots.
  4. 04Programming — night-time watering windows, short frequent cycles suited to free-draining limestone soil.
  5. 05Servicing & winterisation — autumn draining, spring restart, fast repairs.
