Tarascon is the Rhône plain — deep alluvial soils, a high water table, a milder micro-climate than the hill villages of the Alpilles. Gardens here tend to be larger and more family-oriented, and the range of plants that will thrive is wider than on the limestone slopes.
Being close to the Rhône changes things in several ways. The silty soil holds water and copes better with lawn, with fruit trees (peach, apricot, pear, fig) and with slightly thirstier species such as lime or Montpellier maple. In return, the flood risk means thinking about bed levels, drainage and choosing species that tolerate periods of wet ground (ash, willow, dogwood).
Local demand is strongly focused on hedging and screening: we regularly replace single-species cherry laurel hedges — vulnerable to mildew and poor for biodiversity — with mixed country hedges combining viburnum tinus, strawberry tree, common privet, photinia and Mexican orange blossom. For timber fencing, cleft sweet chestnut posts remain our standard for their natural durability without treatment.
The foot of the Montagnette, on the Saint-Michel-de-Frigolet side, calls for the same rigour on statutory firebreak clearance (OLD) as the Alpilles: high summer fire risk and real enforcement by the commune. Our annual contracts build in that obligation and the specific visit before 1 June.
