Landscape stonework in Provence

Stone is everywhere in Provence: the dry stone terracing that structures the slopes of the Alpilles, the calade cobbling that paves the village lanes, the opus incertum paving of terraces. We carry that tradition forward with work that sits naturally alongside the existing buildings and the garden.

Our stonework ranges from dry stone walls (no mortar, a traditional technique listed by UNESCO) to terraces paved in limestone from Les Baux or Fontvieille, taking in cobbled calades, landscape rock work, outdoor staircases and infinity pools. Every structure is built to withstand frost, run-off and roots.

Before anything is laid, we handle the earthworks, the drainage and the stabilising of the sub-base — invisible stages that decide whether the work lasts. Stone is graded and sorted on site; joints are in natural hydraulic lime (NHL) for flexibility and breathability, in keeping with old Provençal buildings.

The stonework we build

  • ›Dry stone terracing and low walls, restoration of old walling
  • ›Paved terraces: Baux limestone, travertine, opus incertum
  • ›Calades and paths in cobbles or reclaimed setts
  • ›Outdoor staircases in solid stone, bush-hammered steps
  • ›Landscape rock work and slope retention
  • ›Pool surrounds, coping stones, hard landscaping
  • ›Fencing, gates and screening
